Entry
Minor inconsistencies in this oak figure carved in the style of Southern Netherlandish sculpture anno 1500 undermine its authenticity. Relevant details include the Virgin’s modern facial type, the unusual, horizontal hem of the veil covering her forehead and the scarcely convincing manner in which she supports the Christ Child with her right hand. In all probability, this figure is a nineteenth-century product of the Gothic Revival.
