Polychromed and fully planked wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a three-masted screw steamer, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard, painted white.

The side of the ship that is painted black is planked on top of frame moulds. Eleven gun ports are painted on the side, placed in one tier. A white, horizontal band highlights the gun deck. At the bow and stern the bulwark is raised with square hances, the waist is open. The bow features a detailed beakhead with a decorative, gold-painted scroll as a billethead. The stem is almost vertical. The stern is elliptical and bears the coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Netherlands above the single-storey quarter gallery. Below the stern a screw aperture and a round-headed rudder with a rounded blade are indicated. The model has a well for lifting a four-blade screw propeller. The sheer is virtually flat. One sheer rail is indicated. The hull is rather sharp and painted a metallic-red copper colour below the waterline. The model has three sets of channels rigged with chainplates. The position of three masts and the bowsprit is shown in a truncated form. The masts are raked considerably.

The model was sent from Flushing to the Department of the Navy in 1855.¹¹HNA 2.12.01 Min. Marine, inv. no. 3979. The 19-gun sloop of war Borneo, 51 metres long, designed by Lambertus Katharinus Turk (1811-1873), was laid down in Rotterdam in 1845. Because of the closure of the Navy dockyard in Rotterdam, it was taken apart and finished by P.A. Bruin in Flushing from 1850 to 1855,²²J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 487. where it was renamed Prinses Amalia and equipped with auxiliary steam propulsion. The engines were manufactured by the Koninklijke Fabriek P. van Vlissingen en Dudok van Heel in Amsterdam. Prinses Amalia was decommissioned in the Dutch East Indies in 1875.³³A.J.
