Halfmodel van een raderstoomschip

Rijkswerf Rotterdam, ca. 1846 - ca. 1848

Gepolychromeerd, geheel beplankt mallenmodel (stuurboord) van een tweemast raderstoomschip. Het model heeft maar één geschutpoort, maar bij het voor- en achterdek ook valpoorten voor geschut op draaislede. Het schegbeeld is een vergulde krul. Elliptisch hek met Rijkswapen; roer met ronde roerkoning (Amerikaans roer) en afgerond roerblad. Raderkast afgedekt met omgekeerde reddingboot; voor en achter de raderkast roosters; aan dek een schoorsteen. Volledig vlakke zeeg. Rondspant. Schaal 1:40 (Obreen).

Entry

Polychromed and fully planked wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a two-masted paddle steamer, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard, painted yellow.

The side of the ship that is painted black is planked and features a closed paddle box. The paddle box has gratings fore and aft and carries an upturned lifeboat on top. One gun port is indicated in the bulwark aft of the paddle box, and two further port-lids are in the bulwark fore and aft for pivot guns. The rounded bow features a detailed beakhead with a decorative, gold-painted scroll as a billethead. Below the elliptical stern, bearing the coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, is a round-headed rudder with a rounded blade. The sheer is flat and is indicated by a white line. The hull is round and painted black below the waterline. A black-painted funnel protrudes from the deck. The position of two masts and the bowsprit are shown in a truncated form.

The model was sent from Rotterdam to the Department of the Navy in August 1848.2See inscription; HNA 2.12.01 Min. Marine, inv. no. 3956 and Exh. 2/9/1848 N14. The 6-gun paddle steamer Suriname, 40.5 metres long, was built at the Nederlandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij Fijenoord in Rotterdam from 1845 to 1846. The hull was made out of iron with a wooden superstructure. In 1851 Suriname departed for the Dutch East Indies, where it remained until its discharge in 1875.3A.J.
