Entry

Polychromed and fully planked wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a two-masted paddle steamer, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard, painted white.

The side of the ship that is painted black is planked and features a closed paddle box. The paddle box carries an upturned lifeboat on top. Two gun ports are indicated in the bulwark. The rounded bow features a detailed beakhead with a decorative, gold-painted scroll as a billethead. Below the elliptical stern a round-headed rudder of the Soetermeer type is indicated, with a blade rounded off at the bottom. The sheer is flat. Two wales and a sheer rail are indicated. The hull is round and painted a metallic copper colour below the waterline. The waterline itself is painted white. The position of two masts and the bowsprit are shown in a truncated form.

Left and right of the hull, at the waterline, are two small square holes, possibly for mounting a metal leg.

The model was sent from Flushing to The Hague in 1848.1HNA 2.12.01 Min. Marine, inv. no. 3956, Exh. 14/8/1848 N5. The 4- to 6-gun paddle steamer Cycloop, 47 metres long, was built by August Elize Tromp (1801-1871) in Flushing from 1840 to 1843. In 1844, the Russian Tsar crossed the Channel to the United Kingdom in this ship.2HNA 2.12.01 Min. Marine, inv. no. 3956, Exh. 16/3/1844 N13 and 10/9/1844 N21. It was subsequently converted for accommodating royal guests. In 1851 it was used as a convoy of the herring fleet. In 1855 it ran aground near Zandvoort and was decommissioned in 1873.3A.J.
