Polychromed fully planked half bracket model of the starboard side of a three-masted ship, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard painted white.

The side of the ship is fully planked on top of frame moulds and is painted black with a small yellow band running along its main gun deck. Twenty-five shadowed gun ports are painted in two tiers. The presence of the forecastle and quarterdeck is only suggested by their gun ports, as the waist is closed by a bulwark. The model has three channels with deadeyes. The sheer rises slightly towards both ends. One wale and a sheer rail are indicated. The bow features a fully detailed, gold-painted beakhead with a carved figurehead depicting a woman with her hair in a bun, a spear in her left hand and a knife tucked into her belt on her right hand side. The cathead is decorated with a gold lion’s head. The elliptic stern has a quarter gallery with an open deck. Below the stern a straight, square-headed rudder is indicated. The hull is S-bottomed and painted a metallic copper below the waterline. The position of three masts and the bowsprit is shown in a truncated form.

This model was transferred from the Navy dockyard in Amsterdam to the Navy Model Room in The Hague on 2 July 1835.²²HNA 2.12.01 Min. Marine, inv. no. 3932, Exh. 30/6/1835 N7. Six 44-gun frigates, measuring 46.21 metres in length, were built according to this design: Sambre (Pieter Schuijt Juniorsz, Amsterdam 1821-25; reduced to a 28-gun frigate in 1828 and renamed Algiers; decommissioned in 1853); Palembang (Pieter Schuijt Juniorsz, Amsterdam 1822-29; decommissioned in 1864); Zaan (Pieter Schuijt Juniorsz, Amsterdam 1825-31; decommissioned in 1850); Rotterdam (Pieter Glavimans Jansz, Rotterdam 1821-26; reduced to a 28-gun frigate in 1838; decommissioned in 1862); Jason (Pieter Glavimans Jansz, Rotterdam 1824-29; decommissioned in 1850) and Ceres (Pieter Glavimans Jansz, Rotterdam 1824-30; converted to a floating battery in 1859-60 and renamed Draak; decommissioned in 1873).³³J.M.
