Life Boat

H.W. Burman (mentioned on object), 1870 - 1885

Eénpersoons reddingbootje met roei- en zeilvermogen, incompleet. De romp bestaat uit mandwerk gevuld met kurk, gevlochten om een zinken bak met houten randen en houten zitbankje. Onder het zitbankje een kistje met opschrift. De romp heeft een afgeknotte spitse boeg en een spiegel met roer met helmstok aan de achtersteven. Het is gebouwd op een houten kiel, waaraan een scharnierende vinkiel van ijzer en zeildoek is bevestigd; vóór heeft de kiel een inkeping, waarschijnlijk voor een valmechaniek. Aan weerszijden van de romp een worstvormige drijver van met kruk gevuld zeildoek. Er zijn twee roeiriemen, die aan uitklapbare roeipennen gehangen worden. Een mastspoor en mastkoker in de cockpit geven aan dat het vaartuigje oorspronkelijk ook een zeiltuig heeft gehad. Het houtwerk is versierd met gepolychromeerde ornamenten. Burman noemde deze uitvinding een "Fish Life Buoy".

Entry

One-person life boat with oars and rigging.

The hull is made of wickerwork filled with cork, surrounding a zinc trough with wooden edges and a wooden seat. Underneath the seat is a wooden box with the inscription. The hull has a truncated bow and a square tuck, a rudder with a tiller attached to the sternpost. The hull is built on a wooden keel, which has a hinged drop keel made of iron and sailcloth; the keel also has a notch, probably for the release mechanism. On both sides is a sausage-shaped float of sailcloth filled with cork. Two oars hang from rowlocks, which can be folded back. A mast step and mast hole indicate the boat originally had a sailing rig. The woodwork of the boat is decorated with polychrome ornaments.

H.W. Burman called this boat a ‘Fish Life Buoy’.
