Poster De Olympiade Onder Dictatuur (D.O.O.D.) (The Olympic Games under Dictatorship)

Johan Jacob Voskuil, 1936-08

The image of this poster is dominated by the capital letters D.O.O.D. (dead in Dutch) and an Olympic shotputter being impeded by a swastika. D.O.O.D. was the name of an international exhibition held in Amsterdam of works by artists who were against National Socialism. In 1936, during the Olympics in Berlin, the capital of Hitler’s Germany, art and sport were political to their very core.
