Decorative Shield

From 1647 the VOC had leather shields decorated with lacquer in Japan, which they sold in India. The Dutch were also interested in such decorative shields, which they had emblazoned with their initials or family coat-of-arms. This one was ordered by Gabriel Happart, head of the VOC post in Japan in 1654.

Rond schild met wapen met helmteken en opschrift. Wapen gevierendeeld twee maal staande leeuw - twee maal drie franse lelies. Aan de buitenrand van het schild een rand met bloemenranken.
