Damask banyan, Anonymous, c. 1775 - c. 1800

silk, l 135cm × w 247cm. More details

This banyan is based on the so-called Japanese gown from the 17th-century, which was a rare Japanese silk kimono and over the years became increasingly imitated in other materials. The differently coloured warp and weft create the colour contrast in the damask pattern: the green flowers stand out against the red ground. The number of weaving faults in this fabric is unusual.
