The sprigs of roses woven into the fabric of this dress are approximately life-size. This kind of realism became fashionable at the end of the 19th century. Silk weavers from Lyons garnered great success when they presented naturalistic floral patterns at the 1889 Exposition Universelle ‘because people were finally looking at nature again.’
