Water jar with a handle and cream glaze

Water jar. Japan, Kyôto. By Ninsei (fl. mid-17th century). Mid-17th century. Stoneware, with gilt lacquer repair. These jars were popular during the mid- and late-17th century when a more elegant style was adopted. Two lacquer repairs reveal the original location of a second handle. Westendorp bequest.
