Paper and Writing Box ‘Pea Plants’

Moriya Shotei (mentioned on object), 1930

The lower part of this stacking box can be used to store paper. The upper part is a double writing box: the right half for Japanese writing utensils, the left for Western ones. The pea plant on the outside appears to be inspired by Dutch gilt leather, while the decoration on the inside of the lid is typically Japanese. This box, a Salon piece from 1930, thus unites Japanese and Western styles.
