The Visitation, Adriaan de Weerdt, c. 1573

brush, h 239mm × w 177mm More details

This drawing, as well as the other sheets in the series, were made using brown oil paint. While unusual in the 16th-century Netherlands, this technique was common in Italy, and De Weerdt likely became familiar with it during his stay in Venice. In this scene, the artist depicted the meeting of two pregnant women: Mary, carrying Jesus, and Elizabeth, carrying John the Baptist.
