Paul Strand shunned the ‘painterly’ style that was so popular in photography circles in his time, but was actually already outdated. Instead, he showed an interest in abstraction, playing with light and dark areas and with lines in the composition. He also casually cropped the image. This made him an American modernist who pioneered new approaches and perspectives in photography.
