The German push in Russia, leaving countless dead in its wake, collapsed at Stalingrad. The name of the city is literally noted on the horizon of a desolate landscape ruled by death and destruction. Johan Briedé made the drawing in the Netherlands in the final year of the Second World War: a portrayal of the distant Eastern Front.
