Seals and Box, Tōgyo Matsumaru, 1941
In addition to his other talents, Robert van Gulik was a calligrapher and seal carver. This box contains a collection of stamps crafted by himself and his Chinese and Japanese artist friends. These were the seals he used most often. The inscription he carved on the box describes the function of the seals, providing a glimpse into the place they held in his heart.
