Italian Landscape

Nicolaes Pietersz Berchem, 1656

Nicolaes Berchem (1620 - 1683). Italian landscape, 1656. The sunny landscapes of Nicolaes Berchem make a very Italian impression. And yet it is not certain that he ever set foot in Italy. This hilly landscape appears to be a faithful rendering. However, like Berchem's other works, it is the product of his imagination. He has positioned the cows and goats in the landscape in a natural manner, and in such a way that they catch just enough light to make them stand out from the background. Bequest of A. van der Hoop, 1854 On loan from the city of Amsterdam, 1885.
