Landscape with a Hunter and other Figures

Jan Wijnants, c. 1660 - c. 1670

Jan Wijnants (1631/32 - 1684). Landscape with a hunter and other figures, c. 1670. A half-dead tree dominates this work, a motif which the artist borrowed from Jacob van Ruisdael. Jan Wijnants produced a great many paintings, not all of them of equally high quality. From 1660 on he lived in Amsterdam, where Philips Wouwerman was one of the most sought-after landscape artists of his day. Jan Wijnants undoubtedly studied the work of his successful fellow Amsterdammer. Bequest of A. van der Hoop, 1854. On loan from the city of Amsterdam, 1885.
