Benares

Marius Bauer, 1913

In this painting, Bauer portrays life in Benares, one of the world’s oldest cities located on the Ganges River, in an idyllic setting. Bauer’s six- month trip through India in 1897 afforded him inspiration for the rest of his life. There is no room for suffering and povertyin his works of art. Instead, he focuses on the beauty of the sunlit city with a bathing woman and child, and rowers pushing off a sloop.
