Zelfportret van Hendrikus van de Sande Bakhuyzen, schilderend in een weidelandschap met vee. De schilder zit op een boomstam met palet en penselen in de hand en de schilderskist met het schilderij op zijn knieën. Naast de boom liggen zijn hoed en kruk in het gras. Voor hem liggen schapen en een koe in de weide.
