Cornelis Troost, 1742

The proudly erect drummer leads the troops out while beating the marching pace on his drums. For Paulus the position of timpanist was a promotion compared to his previous employ as a servant. Yet in this painting the Black man is still depicted with a silver collar around his neck, even in this more prominent function.
