Investiture of King William II in the New Church in Amsterdam on 28 November 1840, by N. Pieneman. Sketch for a large painting produced by Pieneman for the Royal House. To the left of the king: his brother Frederick and his son Alexander. To the right: his sons William and Henry. In the background, centre: Queen Anna Paulowna with, left, her daughter-in-law Sophie (the wife of Crown Prince William),and right, her daughter-in-law Louise of Prussia (wife of Prince Frederick) and her daughter Sophie. On the table in the centre are a copy of the constitution, the crown, the orb and sceptre. Like the sword of state and the national standard these were especially made for the occasion.

    De inhuldiging van koning Willem II in de Nieuwe Kerk te Amsterdam, 28 november 1840. De koning legt rechts, staande onder een baldakijn, met opgeheven hand de eed af. Links liggen op een tafel de troon en scepter. De kerk is gevuld met toeschouwers. Voorstudie voor het schilderij in het bezit van H.M. de Koningin (paleis Noordeinde).
