Theodorus Justinus Rheen (mentioned on object), 1737

The highest-ranking Dutch East India Company (VOC) official in Asia was the governor-general. He presided in the Castle of Batavia (now Jakarta, Indonesia), a fort built by the Dutch. The assembly hall in the Castle of Batavia was the centre of Dutch power in Asia. The walls were hung with portraits of all of the governors-general. Most of the 18th-century examples shown here were painted in Asia, often by anony¬mous artists.

Description
Portret van Adriaan Valckenier (1695-1751). Gouverneur-generaal (1737-41). Staande, ten halven lijve, naar links, het gelaat aanziend. Commandostaf in de rechterhand, met de linkerarm rustend op een boek met een papier waarop het monogram van de VOC. Rechtsboven het familiewapen, linksonder de wapens van Nederlands Oost-Indië, de Republiek en Batavia. Op de achtergrond een schip op zee. Onderdeel van een reeks van portretten van de gouverneurs-generaal van het voormalige Nederlands Oost-Indië.
