Pike and Perch in an Aquarium

Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof (mentioned on object), 1910 - 1920

In this painting a pike can be seen hiding on the bottom while a school of black-grey perch swims overhead. Sunlight shines through the water plants on the surface. Dijsselhof enjoyed studying fish in the aquarium of Amsterdam’s Artis Zoo and specialized in this type of representation. The painting gives you the impression of actually standing next to the artist and peering through the glass.
