Ships after the Battle

Willem van de Velde (I) (mentioned on object), 1630 - 1672

Ships after a battle, by Willem van de Velde I, 1653. Battle-scarred Dutch ships have returned to harbour after an encounter with the English. Torn flags and broken masts bear witness to the engagement. The ship flying the striped flags with a cross in the corner is a captured enemy craft. As soon as they were repaired these vessels would be sent back into the fray.
