King David

Aert de Gelder, 1680 - 1685

Just like his teacher Rembrandt, Aert de Gelder had a penchant for imaginative attire. Figures from the Bible or classical mythology offered a perfect opportunity for such fancy. Here the biblical king David is bedecked with jewels, and wears an enormous turban on his head. The text in the book is not imaginary, but actual Hebrew.
