Glorification of St Joseph

Giuseppe Passeri, 1664 - 1714

The draughtsmanship of Giuseppe Passeri – Maratti’s favourite pupil, whose work hangs alongside here – is swift, almost impatient. He set everything in motion. This infectious delight in drawing resulted in hundreds of preliminary studies for frescoes and oil paintings. This oval sketch was probably a design for a ceiling. In the clouds, St Joseph, surrounded by putti, ascends with Christ to heaven.
