Hilly Landscape with a Swineherd

Jacob Cats (1741-1799), 1791

The wind is blowing hard in this landscape. This is suggested by the movement of the trees and bushes, as well as the swineherd in the foreground, whose hat is nearly blown off his head. The turbulent weather, the foliage turning colour, and the apple harvest are all signs of Autumn. The drawing may well have once been part of a series of the Four Seasons.
