‘Eruditio Musica, Solo Sung by Madame Colin’

Christiaan Andriessen, 1805 - 1808

Andriessen and his family regularly attended concerts by the Eruditio Musica Orchestra in the High German Theatre in Amsterdam. On this evening, Joseph Haydn’s The Seasons was performed, a musical composition that at that time was not even eight years old. A certain ‘Madame Colin’ sang a solo. The audience’s casual mood is striking. Two gentlemen converse in the left foreground, while another one steps unabashedly over a bench at the right.
