Design for a Mural with Young People Making Music

Dionys van Nijmegen, 1715 - 1798

Thanks to reproductive prints, including those in this cabinet, Watteau’s compositions of elegant companies were disseminated and imitated throughout Europe. Here, the Dutch artist Dionys van Nijmegen, inspired by Watteau, invented a composition of a group of people making music in a garden. The trompe-l’oeil window indicates that the composition was meant for a decorative mural.
