‘Goings-on at the Academy’

Christiaan Andriessen, 1805 - 1808

While the hair and face suggest otherwise, this model is actually a man. This can be seen from the figure’s muscles and angular contours, as well as the caption. Female nude models were in fact barred at the Amsterdam Drawing Academy. To maintain this pose long enough, the model held onto a string fastened to the ceiling.
