‘The Weesper Boat Pulling in at Buiten Amstel’

Christiaan Andriessen, 1805 - 1808

It is early evening. A starry canopy extends over the Amstel River, just outside the city. The man helping moor the boat at the left points to the barely visible comet referred to in the caption. In this drawing Andriessen is less interested in the astronomical phenomenon and more in the effect of the bright moonlight on the clouds, the river, and its surroundings.
