Colombo, Gallen, and Jaffna were the most important towns for the VOC on Sri Lanka. The first sight to greet those approaching Colombo from the sea was the governor’s residence, with a church and the VOC’s adjacent wharf. Behind the palace sprawled a large garden where vegetables were grown.
