Jacques de Gheyn (II), 1600 - 1604

Jacques de Gheyn possibly made these studies of a frog during a dissection. He was clearly fascinated by the animal and his depiction is very lifelike. The shadows reinforce the realism. At the same time, the drawing attests to a scientific curiosity about the animal’s anatomy.

Explanatory note

  • Judson vermoedde dat de positie van de kikker links boven, laat zien dat het dier voor vivisectie was gebruikt. De kikker rechts onder laat het dier in zijn laatste stuiptrekking zien voordat het werd geconserveerd.
