Sheet of Studies, with a Woman Lying Ill in Bed

Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1639

Along with other motifs, a woman, depicted twice, can be seen in this sheet. She lies in bed, in one instance sleeping, and in the other staring out listlessly. This must be Saskia, who was deathly ill in 1641. The frequency with which Rembrandt portrayed her leaves no doubts that he was deeply concerned about her condition.
