Narcissus

Jacques Callot, 1621 - 1635

The loosely etched Narcissus kneels in a spare, deserted landscape. The text cautions against excessive love, which would only bring bad fortune. The print is part of a series of emblems devoted to monastic life. In a total of 27 prints, the reader is advised to live chastely, obediently, and humbly; only then is heaven within reach.
