Three Musicians

Heinrich Aldegrever (mentioned on object), 1538

Trombonists and trumpeters were held in high esteem in the 16th century. Many German cities maintained their own company of brass players, called ‘Stadtpfeifer.’ They performed at official festivities and processions and could also be hired by the bourgeois elite for weddings and celebrations. The medal pinned to their cloaks signalled their official status.
