Couple Drinking in a Tavern Garden

Jacob Matham (mentioned on object), 1619 - 1623

This series of four prints is known by the collective title The Consequences of Drunkenness, visually summing up the old Dutch proverb, ‘Cards, stockings and tankards ruin many a man’. In the background here, a bar maid or landlady is keeping a tab of the couple’s drink orders. The motif of the man pouring and drinking simultaneously from two glasses alludes to over-indulgence.
