Beggar in a High Hat, Leaning on a Stick

Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1629

Rembrandt etched the largest of these three beggars in exactly the same style as the figures in the adjacent drawings. He indicated all of the shadows with vertical parallel lines. This hatching adds verve to the depiction, but is also somewhat coarse. In the two other etchings, he achieved a more refined result using the same style in a much smaller format.
