St Peter and St John at the Gate of the Temple

Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1629

Christ’s followers Peter and John came upon a crippled beggar at the temple gate who asked for alms. Peter answered that he had no silver or gold to give him, and instead healed him in the name of Christ. This extremely rare sheet is clearly an early etching by Rembrandt, as can be seen from its rough, sketchy execution. His later etching style is much finer.
