Here Jesus has captured his listeners’ full attention. The standing man examines him, thoughtfully plucking at his beard. Disbelief at so much youthful wisdom is written on the faces of other figures. The man arriving at the right holds a book under his arm. The depiction is powerfully and openly etched, as Rembrandt often did in these years.
