The Virgin and Child in the Clouds

Rembrandt van Rijn (mentioned on object), 1641

Rembrandt not only made prints, but also collected them on a large scale. His collection included many works by Dutch, French, German and Italian masters. With this Virgin in the clouds, he responds to a famous etching by the Italian artist Federico Barocci, which he must have owned. The additional face in the Virgin’s left knee is a vestige of an earlier version.
