Polyptoton de Flore (The Variance of Flowers)

Johann Theodor de Bry (mentioned on object), c. 1600

A staggering variety of flowers are displayed in six richly ornamented vases. The decorative frames indicate that the prints were meant to be hung on the walls, as paintings. This is also clear from the varying perspective of the pedestals under the vases. Quite exceptionally, these impressions were kept in an album which explains their pristine condition.
