The Inconstancy of Fortune; It is Easy to Dance when Fortune Plays for You

attributed to Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert, after c. 1560 - before 1590

This series of six prints, illustrating sayings about Fortune, is devoted to one of the major themes of life. The series was probably created by Coornhert, who was a writer as well as a printmaker. These images show Fortune as an inconstant, unpredictable goddess who dispenses good or bad luck regardless of personal status.
