A Young Woman Deceiving her Old Husband

Crispijn van de Passe (I), c. 1600 - c. 1601

Here is ‘someone being cuckolded.’ The horns allude to the fact that the elderly man is being deceived by his wife and her lover. The cuckold proffers his younger wife a flower, in vain. The verse in the margin predicts her deceit and plan to leave her old husband. The two ‘horns’ in her hair also probably refer to her adultery.
