The Small Lion Hunt, with Two Lions

Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1629

Hunting scenes are a popular theme in art. They feature not only in tapestries and paintings, but also in series of prints. Rembrandt, too, was fascinated by them. In these three etchings, he attempts to capture the excitement and chaos of such violent encounters between men and animals. He further intensifies the drama by means of stark contrasts of light and dark.
