The Entombment

Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1654

Christ is being laid in a tomb as mourning bystanders look on. The areas of shadow in the scene consist of powerful parallel lines. The light source is hidden behind the man with his back to us. Barely any hatching can be discerned in that most brightly lit spot. The deep yellow Japanese paper lends the scene a warm glow, which accords well with lamp or torchlight.
