The Adoration of the Shepherds: Nocturne

Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1657

The ongoing darkening of the scene and repeated printing process began to wear down the plate, leading to a gradual lightening of the impressions. In this print, you can see that Rembrandt addressed this issue by adding numerous new lines, yet he also introduced new elements into the composition. The wooden fence behind Joseph in this state was not there previously.
