Tobias and the Angel

Hendrick Goudt (mentioned on object), 1613

The work of the Utrecht engraver Hendrick Goudt was decisive for Magdalena de Passe’s development as a printmaker. Goudt’s engravings are characterized by strong contrasts of light and dark and the subtle rendering of figures and landscape, clearly visible in this depiction of Tobias and the angel. De Passe adopted these effects. And, like Goudt, she provided her prints with handsome captions and dedications to prominent people.
