Schetsmodel van de overbrenging van de beweging van twee oscillerende cylinders op de as, op een rechtopstaand plankje gemonteerd. De as wordt met een zwengel aan de achterzijde van het plankje in beweging gebracht, waardoor de zuigers en twee dwarsdoorgesneden cylinders ook gaan bewegen. Vier pootjes achter tegen het plankje maken het mogelijk het geheel op zijn rug te leggen.

Explanatory note

  • Het principe van de oscillerende stoommachine werd in 1785 al door Murdoch, werkzaam bij Boulton & Watt, uitgevonden. De eerste toepassingen in de scheepsbouw betrof raderstoomschepen, vanaf ca. 1845, en kort daarop op schroefstoomschepen (Great Britain, Engeland 1846, Samarang, Nederland 1847).

Schematic model of the transmission of the movement of two oscillating cylinders on a crankshaft, mounted on a backboard.

The shaft can be turned by means of a handle at the back and the movement is transmitted to the pistons and the two cross-sectioned cylinders. To the back four legs are fitted, enabling the model to lie on its back.

The principle of the oscillating steam engine was invented by William Murdoch in 1785, while working for Boulton & Watt. In naval architecture it was first applied on paddle steamers from circa 1845 onwards, and on screw steamers shortly after (Great Britain, United Kingdom 1846; Samarang, the Netherlands 1847).
